Can Music Heal People?

When I was about age 10, my family was driving home from Dallas one night. Unfortunately, although I don’t remember why, I had an agonizing stomach ache. Suddenly, the radio started playing the orchestral version of Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”.  It was the first time I had ever heard any version of The Entertainer and it was one of those times when the rest of the world suddenly disappeared. Listening to the catchy melody against the syncopated rhythms was a rapturous experience for me. After the final notes played, I was spell bound and wondering how I could ever even find the name of the piece I just heard. As I was slowly coming back to the “real world”, I was shocked to realize that the agonizing stomach pain was now completely gone! But even that joy was gradually being subdued by the memory of The Entertainer still racing through my mind. It was truly a powerful and literally healing experience.

Perhaps a doctor or a music therapist could explain what happened to me. According to Dr. Michael Friedman, “music therapy has demonstrated efficacy as an independent treatment for reducing depression, anxiety, and chronic pain”. It also helps with many other health concerns including “aiding pain relief” according to Harvard Medical School.

My expertise is in music and not anything related to medicine or the human body. But one thing’s for sure, I’ve personally felt the healing power of music.  How about you – do you have an experience where you witnessed the healing power of music?
