Food Festival Getaway

One of my favorite getaways is visiting a food festival. Like many people, eating yummy food has always been one of my favorite activities. Even as a kid my appetite was always big and healthy. So, if you’re like me and not an overly picky eater, then heading out to a food festival can be quite an enjoyable experience. Here’s some of the reasons why:

Whether you live in a big city or a small town, food festivals are never too far away. And many have a very small entrance fee or no entrance fee at all. Depending on the location, there might be a parking fee. Keep an eye on your local calendars via community magazines and newspapers to see what’s coming to your area. Select one of the dates available and show up when it’s convenient – no appointment necessary. Most food festivals start early morning and last up through the evening. It’s a very easy and convenient getaway for a few hours or in some cases even a full day.

Another reason I enjoy these getaways is that they are often outdoors. When the weather is good, eating is almost always more enjoyable for me when it’s outside. Whether it’s sitting at a table outside watching pedestrians or roaming from booth to booth sampling treats, the fun factor goes up when I’m eating outdoors.

If you want your experience to feel even more like a “getaway”, try an ethnic food festival with foreign dishes. When we visited a few Greek festivals in the Dallas area last Fall, it was easy to forget what city we were actually in. Besides the booths serving a variety of tasty and authentic cuisine, there were plenty of other activities like dance performances, cooking shows, and a wide variety of unique cultural products for sale. Of course, probably the biggest and most magnificent ethnic food festival would be Epcot Center at Walt Disney World. Although it’s not promoted as a food festival, the recreation of villages from around the world with all the food and entertainment is truly an unforgettable getaway!

Another option, which is not actually called a food festival, is a world or international food market. As of now, the most amazing food market I’ve been to is La Boqueria in Barcelona. Some refer to it as a “pilgrimage destination for food lovers”. Imagine an enormous food market with eateries and food festival like displays all under one roof. If you’re ever in Barcelona, it’s a getaway that’s well worth a visit!

My guess is that food festivals might be sometimes overlooked when people are planning activities. I almost never hear friends or family speak about them. For me, I aim to be more pro-active in including them in future plans as they are low cost and easily scheduled for a few hours or even a full day of fun.
How about you? What and where was your favorite food festival experience?
